The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award

Empowering students to explore their full potential at Essington.

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award program is a youth personal development program which empowers students to explore their full potential and find their purpose, passion and place in the world.

Available for Middle and Senior School students at Essington, the non-competitive program requires students to learn a skill, improve their physical well-being, volunteer in their new community, and experience a team adventure in a new environment.

Essington's Duke of Ed program has seen a lot of success over the past 15 years, with over 750 Essington students achieving either a Bronze, Silver or Gold Award. With approximately 200 students enrolled in the award from Year 8 to Year 12, Essington is one of the leading schools in the Northern Territory and one of the biggest in Australia in regard to enrolments and completions over the last decade.

Completion of the Duke of Edinburgh Award provides many benefits for Essington students including:

  • Helps students to increase their skills and capabilities beyond just academic achievements, allowing them to showcase these newfound capabilities to future employers and universities.
  • Completion of the following awards results in an NTCET credit point
    • Bronze and Silver is the equivalent of x1 Stage 1 class (10 credit points),
    • Gold is the equivalent of x1 Stage 2 class (20 credit points)
